What is a color wheel? And why is it important for us to know that ?
As a design student, the first thing we learnt is the magical world of the color wheel. Now, you might be wondering, “Why should I care about this as someone who isn’t into fashion design?” Well, hold on to your hats because I’ve got some fabulous news for you!
Whichever profession you are in, looking good and feeling confident is something we all desire, am I right? And guess what? The color wheel has got your back! Knowing how colors work can be a game-changer in your everyday life.
Imagine this: You open your wardrobe, and instead of feeling overwhelmed, you start seeing endless possibilities! With the power of the color wheel, you’ll transform your old clothes into stunning ensembles that’ll make you shine like a star. It’s like unlocking a secret fashion superpower!

It’s like our childhood drawing class all over again, where we learned about primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) and how they form the base of this fantastic wheel. Mixing two primary colors creates secondary colors (orange, green, and purple), sitting side by side and getting along like best buds.
But wait, it doesn’t end there! We have fantastic tertiary colours too! They’re the cool kids born from mixing a primary color with a secondary color. So many hues to play with! Mixing red and orange creates the lovely coral, yellow and green give us chartreuse (lime green), and blue and purple give us indigo (like a dark denim dream).
Now, this color wheel is not just for fun and games; it’s a secret fashion weapon! It helps us create harmonious color schemes that are a treat for the eyes. There’s the analogous scheme, where colors from the same family (red, orange, yellow) (blue, gre en, purple)come together to form a stylish alliance. They sit next to each other in the color wheel.
Now going to monochromatic, where we rock different shades of one color, like a mid tone pink top with a darker pink skirt or tones of yellow…That means we are mix n matching the same family colour but in combination of tint and shade. Adding textures like lace, dobby, knit and woven combo makes it even more exciting!
But hey, don’t forget the complementary color scheme! It’s like our Christmas color theme (red and green) – colors sitting opposite to each other in the wheel, ready to make a fabulous statement! Just remember to balance them well! Do not distribute the colors equally…Keep one as the main and add the 2nd color in highlight or in less proportion…Knowledge of these classification helps us individuals to discover colors that compliment our skin tone and enhance our personal style.
Now, when we pick prints with multiple colors, it can get overwhelming, right? So many questions takes the peace of our mind. Will it look good on us or is it classy enough for us to even consider… But fear not! We’ve got a secret formula – the triadic and tetradic color scheme! Making a triangle or a square on the color wheel guides us to find the right mix for that stunning print. Like Red-yellow-blue are the example of triadic colours and Yellow, violet, green, red are the example of tetradic colors. It’s all about that undertone. If you have a pink undertone, cool colors are your jam – they’ll make you look stunning and rosy-cheeked! But if you’re rockin’ a yellow undertone, warm colors are your go-to for that glowy, sun-kissed vibe! To find out your undertone, check out your veins – blue or purple means you’re cool, green means you’re warm, and a mix of all three means you’re a neutral queen!
Now, for some glitter and glam! Warm undertones, get ready to dazzle with gold jewellery – it’s your ticket to fabulousness! Cool undertones, it’s your time to shine with silver pieces that’ll make you sparkle like a snowflake! And if you’re like me, loving both gold and silver, guess what? You’re a fashion chameleon with that neutral undertone!
For the classy vibes ! As all of you know that black and white are a timeless duo, but if black isn’t your cup of tea! Swap it out with a hue of similar intensity, and you’ll still rock that contrast like a boss! To nail a perfect look, mix mid-tones with darker shades – it’s a piece of cake!

But wait, there are two cool words we gotta know – “Tint” and “Shade”!

Shade is all about adding black… All the fabulous dark tones like deep blue, sultry red, burnt orange – perfect for the evening. Now, you’re armed with the secret knowledge of Tint and Shade! Let’s go back to our topic of occasion and colors.
While wearing colors we must consider the place , time or occasion for us to wear .
Daytime vibes are all about that refreshing glow, so think whites and colored tints – perfect for soaking up that lovely sunlight! But hold up! When the sun sets, it’s time for bold and beautiful darker colors to shine! Think celebratory and glamorous !
But keep it simple, no overdoing it, or we might just slip from chic to tacky territory! So let’s trust our instincts and wear what makes us feel comfortable and confident. After all, confidence is the ultimate fashion accessory! isn’t it?
We often find ourselves impulsively buying clothes without considering the reasons behind the purchase or where and when we’ll wear them. It can be so tempting, especially during those end-of-season sales! But true style is not just about looking good for others – it’s about feeling fantastic from within!
